“When they had rowed three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But He said them, “It is I, don’t be afraid.” Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.” (John 6:19-21 NIV)
Sometimes the Holy Spirit speaks in echoes. Our pastor preached on Mark 4:35-41 yesterday, reminding us that Jesus is in our boat. This morning, in the book of John, we find the disciples had set off for the other side of the lake without Jesus. Other gospels suggest He sent them on ahead. Mid-crossing, the winds on the Sea of Galilee picked up and the waves grew rough. A man appeared, walking upon the water. I can only imagine the disciples fright. How do you hide from a water-walker? Where can you conceal yourself upon the face of the open sea?
Yet somehow the disciples dealt with their fear to a point of recognition. It was their Jesus plodding upon the waters of their storm. Recognition resulted in invitation: the disciples were willing to take Him aboard. Frightened, but willing. And as a result, Jesus’ presence in their vessel made their journey smoother and far speedier.
I wonder, what has blown up in your life today? What waves are crashing against your bow? Do you yet recognize the form of Jesus hovering above your waters? It is He, traipsing across your personal sea, set to climb aboard your boat and make the last bit into smooth sailing.
“Immediately He spoke to them and said: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Then He climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed.” (Mark 6:50b-51 NIV)
Lord, we acknowledge just how hard it is to sail anywhere without You. Today we are searching the sea for Your form. Despite our fear, we invite You into our boat. Make Your home with us, in us. Calm the sea and carry us safely to the other side. Amen.
