The truth is, we can worry our way through the night or we can worship our way through the night. One way is exhausting, the other is restorative. When it’s your turn to stand as a watchman, how will you wait?

It’s only natural to fall into the rhythm of the world around us: work, eat, play, sleep. Make a buck or two, spend it; repeat. Sit as center of our own universe. But the Creator has invited us to a higher plan of living. He bids us to wait and work and walk with the Kingdom of God in full view.
As a pastor, I am well aware of the pressure to perform amidst passion week. Busy is the badge of the good minister, isn’t it? And where exactly in scripture can we cite this example? What in life is ever made better by rushing? Ann Voskamp’s words come to mind, how hurry makes amateurs of us all.
Friend, be assured, God makes it all lovely by the very end. Isn’t that a comfort when we wait in the tension of today? In what feels to be the last long stretch of not quite right? Whatever you are facing this morning: lack or loss or even utter silence, take some time to reflect on these scriptures and stretch out your trust once more.
The winter-time flurry of childhood wonder has come and passed all too quickly. But still, it’s Christmas. Christ has come and He’s coming again. And thankfully, Advent reminds me to wait with joyful anticipation even as the seasons change.
What if we spent the entire month of November in actual gratitude? If we refused to run full-speed toward Decembers festivities? If we intentionally allowed the infringing cold and darkness to slow our soul a bit and warm our hearts by giving thanks?
Despite it’s inferior feeling, waiting is actually a powerful posture.
God is not slow in keeping His promise, we are slow in letting His promise keep us. The the journey slows down, it is grace so we can catch up to where God longs for us to live: unafraid, totally devoted, excited about the future with Him.
