Pouring Out and Filling Up

“Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.”
(Psalm 62:8 NIV)

Thankfully, our trust is not limited to our stretches of understanding. Our trust is ongoing; crucial to success in our walk with God. ALL is the most inclusive word I know; there are no limitations or black-out dates with divine trust. God deserves unfaltering trust. He’s earned it. He has never fumbled the ball; not with us as individuals and not with humanity as a whole. Just when we begin to think He’s maybe failed, time proves the error in our perspective, not His perfection.

This scripture seems to imply that pouring out is paramount to trust. This makes sense when we consider how emotions can cloud our confidence. The psalmist urges us to get with God and empty ourselves in His presence; creating a flesh and blood vacuum for His Spirit to flood. Trust is built when we are barefaced in His presence, not when we are hiding or pretending. We forget that God is our refuge: the one place we can run and be utterly blunt and still be received as beloved son or daughter.

Unaddressed emotions may inadvertently hinder our trust. Disappointment, fear, frustrations, hurts or preoccupations pile up and interfere with our ability to perceive and believe in the goodness of God. To guard against this blear, we go to Him and pour ourselves out again, confident in His ability to fill us up with something purer and truer than what we possessed before. We push off from our time with the Lord refreshed, refilled and ready to trust again. We pour out and God pours in.

“He saved us, not because of the righteous things we have done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,” (Titus 3:5-6 NIV)

Lord, today we are so grateful for Your mercy that meets us each and every time we reach for You. Grant us the courage to pour out our hearts. May we no longer mask or hide our disappointments, frustrations and hurts. Help us self-empty for the sake of being refilled with You. Reinforce our trust again. You never fail. You never have. You never will. Amen.
