Then the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He replied, “I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.” (Genesis 3:9-10 NLT)
Why do we hide?
Sin, for sure, will send us into hiding. But so will shame. Sometimes the shame is sourced in our own behavior but sometimes it sourced in the actions against us. Either way, it will send us into the shadows.
Fear and pain will have us scurrying to the corners of the room, as well. Pain will distance us from others; from exposure and the inevitable irritation of our injury. Fear will freeze us out of relationships altogether, if we allow it.
Hiding inhibits intimacy with God and with others. But note what happens upon confession; Adam and Eve’s nakedness was covered. God made a sacrifice so they could wouldn’t have to walk around in shame.
When we confess our inhibitor to intimacy (sin, shame, fear or pain) God can cover that, too. Confession is the catalyst for covering. And covering is the key to recovery. It wasn’t until Adam and Eve were honest about what was happening in their heart that they could receive God’s grace.
“Come close to God, and He will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.” (James 4:8 NLT)
Lord, help us see the ways we have hidden because of fear, shame, pain and sin. Give us the courage to come to You and confess. Forgive, alleviate and cover as only You can. Thank You. Amen.
