“He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.” (John 3:2 NIV)
Nicodemus’ hunger for the things of God kept him up at night.
Nicodemus stands in high contrast to my own middle of the night tendencies. Hunger for God gets me out of bed in the morning, but earthly concerns keep me up at night. I try to take every though captive and make it obedient to Christ but at night I am tired and my resolve proves weak.
Not Nicodemus. Apparently he was far braver under cover of darkness. He sought the Teacher and proclaimed his faith in the wee hours. He wrestled with theology while the world lay sleeping.
When we can’t sleep, when the anxieties of the day are stealing our peace, we can get up and get into God’s Word. We can take our problems straight away to the Savior. It seems He is always willing to have a chat with us.
“I rise before dawn and cry for help. I have put my hope in Your Word.” (Psalm 119:48 NIV)
Lord, please help us focus on You when fear creeps in; day or night. May our hunger be great enough to swap out our anxiety for Your presence and ultimately Your peace. Amen.
