Immutable

“In the beginning You laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. They will perish but You remain; they all wear out like a garment. Like clothing, You will change them and they will be discarded. But You remain the same, and Your years will never end. The children of your servants will live in Your presence; their descendants will be established before You.”
(Psalm 102:25-28 NIV)

God is immutable.

immutable: adjective invariable; unalterable; not capable or susceptible of change.

My husband preached on it yesterday and the morning’s truth is still lingering in my mind like the memory of a great cup of coffee. God is immutable.

Consider it. Every one and everything we have ever seen or known is in process: growing, changing, deteriorating, deconstructing, maturing, moving toward or away from perfection. But God: God is and was and always has been immutable: unchanging and perfect in His static and exemplary state.

There is something deeply comforting about being able to pull close to unbroken perfection. His consummate peace is always available to the believer. While the world rages and crumbles around us, God remains our unflappable shelter amidst the storm.

Rubble and excavations underway around the Temple Mount.

I keep circling back to the ancient foundation we saw in Israel. The Temple Mount is made up of mighty stones; tremendous hand-hewn blocks standing twenty-five feet tall, forty feet wide and fifteen feet deep. These stones have stood holding up the Temple Mount for over two thousand years. I laid my hand upon them in wonder; how were they hewn? How were they drug into rightful place? How have they stood through two millennia? And in that moment of awe, the Lord spoke so plainly: “I’ll stand longer still.” As impressive as these antique footings are – the Ancient of Days far outlasts and outshines them. I remember Jesus words about heaven and earth passing away, but the Word of God stands forever. The Word and the Author and His promises are immutable. And we get to build our life on that.

Standing with some of the smaller stones on the Southern Steps.

“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born, or You brought for the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” (Psalm 90:1-2 NIV)

Lord, today we are reminded and astonished all over again. Your immutable nature is a tremendous comfort to us. You are steadfast when the world is in endless upheaval. Please give us the grace to run to You for shelter and grow toward You in all circumstances. Amen.
