“But don’t just listen to God’s word, you must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” (James 1:22 NLT)
When it comes to Christ, we’ve got so much more to do than warm pews and critique the sermon. Being a believer is about hearing and doing. Listening and acting. Jesus made this abundantly clear to His disciples.
“Now that you know these things, God will bless you for doing them.”
(John 13:17 NLT)
The blessing comes by doing, not by knowing. We can collect data all day long, but until we start to do something with that information, there is no hard evidence of life change. Doing authenticates the revolution taking place in our heart.
Note that Jesus said this in the midst of washing feet. He had lowered Himself to the place of the least valuable servant in the house. We might scratch our head at this until we recall how the Prince of Heaven came to earth to die on the cross for the sins of mere mortals. Jesus served His disciples in the humblest of tasks and it was made holy when it was done on behalf of the Kingdom.
Lord, help us to be hearers and doers of Your word. Impact our hearts and incite action today. Show us when and where we can serve, hand us humble tasks made holy by Your direction. Let us live love and truth out loud through acts of service and words of truth. Amen.
