Followers First

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV)

This verse takes the pressure off us as leaders, doesn’t it? It reminds us that we are not responsible to lead in our own strength, we are only responsible to follow Christ. The number one task of a leader is to be a good follower.

So what makes a good follower?

Close proximity. Responsiveness. Right attitude.

Let’s unpack this:

Close proximity. Good followers stay close. If space grows between us and our Savior, relationship lags and we fall behind. Obedience falters. We wind up leading in our own flesh instead of staying in step with His Spirit. Staying near is a basic requirement of Christ following.

Responsiveness. A good follower is quick to adjust their expectations to the vision of their leadership. When God speaks to His people; those determined to stay close will respond in obedience, unwilling to let disobedience interfere with right relationship. Nearness allows for questions, but not insubordination. We remember our place. God is in command and we serve at His good pleasure.

Right attitude. The wandering Israelites teach us that it is not enough to simply go with God. Complaint causes consequence. Grumbling gives way to waywardness. Rebellion destroys relationship. We must go gladly with God, fully persuaded that His way is the best way, even when it feels rough for our flesh.

Leaders are really only followers. We are folks who have historically and continually surrendered to the leadership of the Lord. Leadership success comes through close proximity, responsiveness and right attitude.

“It is the Lord your God you must follow, and Him you must revere.” (Deuteronomy 13:4 NIV)

Lord, we recognize again that the highest levels of leadership should truly be followers first and foremost. We focus on maintaining close proximity, responsiveness and right attitude. We can’t lead if we haven’t figured out how to follow. Thank You for reminding us of this truth. Help us take it to heart. Our first and only priority is staying close to You: good leadership will flow from there. Amen.
