Every When

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8 NLT)

Yesterday we walked through the pages of time as effortlessly as one walks across the living room. It’s easy to do in the Holy Land. This morning I sit perched on the balcony of our modern hotel, overlooking the remains of a twelfth century century synagogue beside the ancient Sea of Galilee. But more startling than the view from my room, the ruins of Megiddo revealed the ages in succinct skins like an archeological layered cake; the Bronze Age, the Iron Age, the Temple ages all piled up on one another. Our team of enthusiastic and exhausted pilgrims discussed it at dinner: so much biblical history in every step.

I was stuck by a single thought: God saw it all. Witnessed every minute of every age firsthand. He was there when the first stone of Megiddo was laid. He was there with the first conquering tribe laid waste as well. He watched as Megiddo regathered and rise, only to return to rubble again. 25 times they built and rebuilt. God saw it all. But His holy sights weren’t only on the small stone fortress, but also across the valley on My Carmel and Mt Tabor, He watched over Jerusalem, Jericho and even sleepy Bethlehem. What is requiring days and miles for us to unpack has all been witnessed by our God and written in His book.

Translate this thought to our own story. He tends to our existence with the same patient care, the same sovereign involvement over our ordinary and fleeting days.

“You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your Book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” (Psalm 139:16 NLT)

Today, Lord, may we take comfort in Your complete knowing. May we be sure of Your presence in every one of our days. May we surrender to the great wave of Your sovereignty and count ourselves blessed to be loved by You. Amen.
