“By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at His hand.” (Hebrews 11:3 NLT)
In school, science was always a favorite subject of mine. My dad was a high school botany teacher, so we spent my childhood making observations about our natural world. Whether we were studying Queen Anne’s lace on the side of the road, labeling the star systems in the far-flung sky or discussing mechanical systems in the garage, we talked about how it worked and reveled in intelligent design. Because of this world-view, it’s not at all difficult for me to gaze at the sky and call out God’s great intelligence and artistry, or to look down and discover equally fascinating delineation under the watchful eye of a microscope.
So if we have such extraordinary faith in the composition, creation and sustentation of life on the macro level (stars and planets, ecosystems, and humans bodies) why is so hard to believe that our Creator has the same level of purpose, attention and sovereignty on a micro level: in the ordinary yet highly-involved inter-workings of our daily life>
I’m a bit reprimanded this morning. I have long believed in God’s absolute dominion; this is something that settled in me very early on. Yet, in the past few months I’ve wondered if I’ve somehow run off the rails. Shame on me, misplacing the blind trust I’ve always maintained in the Father’s absolute authority.
Today I feel the need to affirm my faith in His dominion. For my own sake, I’m going to share a few scriptures that solidify the truth of His sovereignty.
“He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea and everything in them – He remains faithful forever.” (Psalm 146:6 NIV)
“Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.” (2 Chronicles 20:6 NIV)
“From one man He made all nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth’ and He marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.” (Acts 17:26 NIV)
“All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalm 139:16 NIV)
“A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.”
(Proverbs 16:9 NIV)
“I know you can do all things and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.” (Job 42:2 NIV)
Lord, You reign over every system that sustains life and every life, also. You appoint the times and the places that we live. You have purpose pent up in every day of our brief existence. Today we reaffirm our sure faith in Your sovereignty, our solid belief in Your grasp on the world and everyone in it. We look to You to make sense of it for us and lead us into whatever is next for sake of the Kingdom. Have Your perfect way in us. We surrender to Your heavenly agenda. Amen.
