“In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote abut all that Jesus began to do and teach…” (Acts 1:1 NIV)
Apostle Luke wrote two books; the gospel bearing his name and Acts. In Bible school they teach us to consider these tow books like acts in a play or volumes in a series. The first of the set focuses on the acts of Jesus and the second focuses on the acts of the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of Christ deposited in every believer. Luke’s opening reminds us that Jesus started a work and the Holy Spirit continues that work amidst His disciples. What He began, we carry on with. One day, He’ll be back to bring about the conclusion. Until then, we, His disciples, keep after His instructions.
“…until the day He was taken up to heaven.” (Acts 1:2 NLT)
Jesus attended to Kingdom things all the way up until His end. He lived with total focus on what mattered most. We can study His story and continue to learn from Him.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you’ and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NLT)
The power we receive has glorious purpose: we are called to continue the work of Jesus. It is a huge task and we require supernatural help.
Lord, we want to keep after what You were after. Strengthen us. Embolden us by Your Holy Spirit. Keep us tending to Kingdom things. Help us continue on with what You started. Supernaturally equip us for Kingdom business. Amen.
