“But to the tribe of Levi, Moses had given no inheritance; the Lord, the God of Israel, is their inheritance, as He promised them.” (Joshua 13:33 NIV) I found unexpected encouragement in Joshua’s land allocations this morning. All the tribes are listed, along with their…

This verse in Joshua makes me think about my collecting years versus my assigned task. I am not looking to conquer Texas or unseat any local rulers, but my battles are just about as bloody. They lie within. I consider the size and scope of my heart and soul and I know that there is still a lot of ground to be taken.
“The man brought me back to the entrance to the Temple and I saw water pouring out from under the threshold of the Temple (for the Temple faced the east). The water was coming down from under the south side of the Temple, south of…
“At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again. So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gilbreath Haaroloth.” (Joshua 5:2-3 NIV) It’s a little off-putting how often I write about circumcision on this blog, isn’t…
“Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and stuck the high priest’s servant cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.)” (John 18:10 NIV) We’ve all been Simon Peter, haven’t we? His anger was justifiable; his Savior was being arrested! Surely…
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV) Yesterday I did a lot of housekeeping. I’ve been working on a major writing deadline (stay tuned for an exciting announcement!) and our home was bearing the evidence of it.…
We cannot afford to get fat and happy and forget our God. We cannot depend upon ourselves because we are utterly unequipped to save from ourselves from sin. Only God can provide what we truly require.
Consider marriage. Our union is successful when we remember to reach for each other. It deteriorates when we begin to reach for other things. The same is true with God. Holding fast includes all seasons and situations. Remarkably, it is absolutely how He holds to us. Do we hold to Him with the same determination?
If Jesus sought out miserable souls to offer relationship and speak salvation, then so should we. No one is too far gone. Every person is an image bearer and needs to be treated as such. We behave as neighbors when we notice another’s pain, when we stop to tend to it as best we can.
Slowing our soul to God’s pace is the relational equivalent of measuring twice and cutting once. Waiting on God means making fewer mistakes.
