A Vast Sum

“If You, Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve You.” (Psalm 130:4-5 NIV)

Have you ever considered the sum total of your sin? Take a moment, right now, and try to tally up your transgressions against God… against others… It’s a bit staggering, isn’t it?

For me, at least, within a few minutes, it becomes unimaginable. Any further pondering produces angst angst and we can relate to Paul who labels himself ‘chief sinner’.

We know our own stuff, don’t we? We know what God has set us free from, what He is continuing to set us free from. We need His grace maybe even more than we need our next breath.

I think sometimes we forget. We give our lives to God, get our forgiveness and we get a little big for our britches.

This morning, let’s remember where we came from. Let’s recall the ongoing grace we still require. And let’s remember how God, in His lovingkindness, is ever faithful to provide it. Let’s praise Him today because His mercies are new again this morning!

“You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call on You.” (Psalm 86:5 NIV)

Lord, right now we look back with awe and gratitude. You have over and over again extended forgiveness to us. Your great love and mercy has gotten our attention today and we respond with praise and worship. Thank You for rescuing us from our body of death. May we use our new creation to honor You. Amen.
