“I will give thanks to the Lord because of His righteousness; I will sing the praises of the Lord Most High. (Psalm 8:17 NIV)
What a relief that the most high office in the created universe is held by a righteous Judge! Older translations employ the word ‘just’. With all the accusations, shadows and claims about our current election situation, I’d imagine most Americans have grave concerns about corruption in the upper echelons of our government. We certainly can’t trust the media to be just – social or news; several networks and platforms have outright censored the President of the United States for pity’s sake. How do we respond to such deception?
We recall our hope is not in these people or this presidency. We recognize the supremacy of God Almighty and we give thanks that He is just. He is righteous. We repeat again and again, as many times our souls need to hear it, He is sovereign.
Let’s take a look at Webster’s definitions:
righteous – action in accord with divine or moral law.
just – acting or being in conformity with what is morally upright or good.
sovereign – possessed of a supreme power, unlimited in extent and enjoying autonomy.
We rest: actively trusting these certain qualities of our God and King. As our country deteriorates into corruption and moral decay, the righteousness of God stands in stark contrast to our current events. Our hearts are drawn to Him like moths to the flame.
What we are experiencing in America right now is terribly sad but not surprising, we’ve been actively abandoning biblical authority for decades. How can we hold people to ever-changing moral standards? We can’t. When we trade scriptural truth for feelings, we erode the soil of our nation; embarking on a boat that will inevitably be tossed to and fro by the waves of every wind and doctrine, subject to the cunning and craftiness of people and their deceitful scheming. (Ephesians 4:15)
No, believer, especially in this volatile season, cling to the firmament of God’s word. Take everything you see and hear and test it against the light of scripture. (Ephesians 5:13) Gird your most vulnerable organs with truth. (Ephesians 6:14) And be thankful that our true King is the one who rules ALL nations and He is completely righteous. (Revelation 15:3-4 NIV)
“I’m thanking God, who makes things right. I’m singing the fame of heaven-high God.” (Psalm 7:17 MSG)
Lord, we are wringing our hands over the state of our nation right now. But we look to You and see righteousness and justice shining through. We recognize Your sovereignty. We submit to Your authority. We rest in the truth that You have a perfect plan unfolding. You are entirely faithful so we wait with upturned faces, convinced that our hope is so much higher than the earth our feet rest upon today. Thy will be done, Lord. We trust in You. Amen.
