“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (1 Corinthians 5:17 NIV)
Rob and I enjoy watching the fixer-upper type shows. We have restored or transformed a variety of spaces over the years and thus appreciate the vision of the designer, the effort of the contractors, and the joy of the homeowner. There is something deeply satisfying about watching a home renovation take place.
This scripture reminds us: we are being renovated. There is a great transformation taking place in our soul. A great deal of it is immediate upon salvation, but we continue to cooperate with the Spirit of God toward complete sanctification.
The newness of our creation is cause for great joy. Consider again a remodeled home: the homeowner is happy and the neighbors are happy. On these television shows, there’s often a neighbor who stops by to say something like “I’m so glad someone is finally doing something with this property. It’s been an eyesore for far too long.” And when the homeowner sees the finished job they make exclamations along the lines of “I can’t believe I get to live here!”
When we are renovated as people, joy abounds also. It’s threefold. We, as the believer, are ecstatic and enthusiastic. Our neighbors (friends, family, co-workers) are delighted and maybe even relieved. And our God – the property manager, designer and general contractor – is well-pleased with His handiwork. Everyone is rejoicing and God gets the credit.
“Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power to work within us, to accomplish more than we might ask or think. Glory to Him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever! Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 NLT)
Lord, today we recognized how You have indeed made us a new creation. Long ago, when we gave our lives over to You, You made us new. But also, today. Today, You are sanctifying. Today You are searching out strongholds and revealing proclivities. You are still steadily transforming us more into Your image. We recommit to cooperation and we collectively give You the glory for all You have already accomplished. We are being made new and we praise You. Amen.
