“After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.”
(Luke 10:1 NIV)
Why in pairs? Have you ever thought about it?
Pairs provide built in accountability and encouragement. Pairs (walking in spiritual vulnerability) protect from sin and scandal. Pairs provide support in the field.
Note that Jesus sent the pairs ahead of Him: a ministry partnership makes way for the presence of Jesus. This makes sense when we consider His promise.
“For where two or three gather in my name, there I am with them.”
(Matthew 18:20 NIV)
Just the act of two setting out together to do ministry in tandem invites Jesus into their work. As a part of a couple who has devoted their lives to ministry, this is great news. What others have seen as unorthodox or a complication is actually a great God-design.
“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NIV)
Lord, we receive this instruction with joy, glad for the opportunity to partner in ministry. We see a partner as an asset, not a hinderance. Send us out, keep us connected and effective, ultimately meet us there. Amen.
