Embracing the King

“The Lord will be King of the whole earth. On that day where will only be one Lord and His name the only day.” (Zechariah, 14:9 NIV)

The fourteenth chapter of Zechariah is a little shocking. It speaks of the day the Lord comes to reign. Possessions will be plundered, the city ransacked. An earthquake will split the Mount of Olives in two: total surrender eclipsed by complete triumph. The day and night will have no distinct boundaries: only light. Living water will flow from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean. The Lord will be King.

In Jerusalem with the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives standing behind us.

What about us? What about today? Are we prepared for such a kingship? Honestly, gazing inward, I’m not entirely sure. I am attached to my possessions and routine. How will I respond to Heaven’s rule?

My Bible-believing friends keep telling me: be ready, it’s nearly time. They search the skies for signs of the second coming and I wonder if it’s better for me to search my heart for signs of potential anarchy. Am I ready to let the Lord rule every part of my existence?

I read a little farther and find further inspiration.

“On that day, HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the Lord’s house will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar. Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord God Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the post and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord Almighty.” (Zechariah 14:20-21 NIV)

On the day of the Lord every common thing will be made holy. All my possessions will be dedicated to God alone. And there will no longer be a Canaanite – or an idolater – in the hour of God. All will worship God alone.

Teach me that it all belongs
That everything is sacred
I eat the bread and drink the wine
But help me love my neighbor
(Pat Barrett)

Lord, please help us today, to dedicated every part of our lives to You. Remake the common holy. Rid us of our idolatrous nature. Reign in our hearts and minds from here forward. Amen.
